Acta 2016, 637, 143\u2013153<br><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.tca.2016.05.015\">To the article\u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effect\n of side chain length and degree of polymerization on the decomposition \nand crystallization behaviour of chlorinated poly(vinyl ester) oligomers<br>ABSTRACT:\n Four members of a homologous series of chlorinated poly(vinyl ester) \noligomers CCl3\u2013(CH2CH(OCO(CH2)mCH3))n\u2013Cl with degrees of polymerization \nof 10 and 20 were prepared by telomerisationusing carbon tetrachloride. \nThe number of side chain carbon atoms ranges from 2 (poly(vinyl acetate)\n to 18 (poly(vinyl stearate)). The effect of the n-alkyl side chain \nlength and of the degree of polymerizationon the thermal stability and \ncrystallization behaviour of the synthesized compounds was \ninvestigated.All oligomers degrade in two major steps by first losing \nHCl and side chains with subsequent breakdownof the backbone. The \nmembers with short side chains, up to poly(vinyl octanoate), are \namorphous andshow internal plasticization, whereas those with high \nnumber of side chain carbon atoms are semi-crystalline due to side-chain\n crystallization. A better packing for poly(vinyl stearate) is also \nnoticeable.The glass transition and melting temperatures as well as the \nonset temperature of decomposition areinfluenced to a larger extent by \nthe side chain length than by the degree of polymerization. \nThermalstability is improved if both the size and number of side chains \nincrease, but only a long side chaincauses a significant increase of the\n resistance to degradation. This results in a stabilization of PVAc \nsothat oligomers from poly(vinyl octanoate) on are stable under \natmospheric conditions. Thus, the way todesign stable, chlorinated PVEs \noligomers is to use a long n-alkyl side chain.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>D. Heinze, Th. Mang, C. Popescu, O.
