Weichold <br>Carbohydrate Polym. <strong>2018<\/strong> <br><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.carbpol.2018.12.031\">To the article\u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sorption-active transparent films based on chitosan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABSTRACT:\n In this paper we describe the preparation of alkanoic acid-based \naqueous chitosan solutions, which show no sign of acid-catalysed \ndepolymerisation over time \u2013 something commonly accompanying other \npreparation methods. Longer chitosan chains have previously been shown \nto exhibit more advantageous biological activities, and constant \nviscosities are essential for consistent quality in biomedical \napplications. Avoiding acid-catalysed depolymerisation requires careful \ncontrol of the stoichiometry between the free amino groups of chitosan \nand the appropriate solubilising acid. Acetic and butyric acid are both \nsuitable solubilising agents, but chitosan butyrate exhibits lower \nsolution viscosities due to a combined electric and steric shielding of \nthe chains.<br>These solutions dry into clear transparent films that \nremain fully water soluble and absorb up to 70\u2009wt% of water from 90 %-RH\n vapour phase at 25\u2009\u00b0C. The absorption follows simple first-order \nkinetics and the rate constants increase with increasing humidity up to \napprox. 71 %-RH, where a metastable chitosan trihydrate salt appears to \nbe formed. Desorption is slightly faster, but more complex, as it \nexhibits two distinct first-order processes. In addition, films prepared\n in this way are thermally more stable than the usual chitosan \nhydrochloride.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M. B. Endres, O.
