Weichold <br>Ionics <strong>2019<\/strong> <br><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11581-019-02958-x\">To the article\u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Preparation\n and characterisation of ion-conductive unsaturated polyester resins for\n the on-site production of resistivity sensors<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABSTRACT: \nIon-conductive unsaturated polyesters were synthesised from \npoly(ethylene oxide) and maleic anhydride for use in the development of \nimproved methods for the structural-health monitoring of infrastructural\n buildings. The unsaturated polyesters (UP) were cross-linked with \nstyrene using a redox initiator in the presence of LiClO4. \nElectrochemical impedance-spectroscopy was used to study the effects of \ninitiator and styrene concentration as well as the EO:Li+ ratio. \nIncreasing the initiator or styrene content results in an increased \nresistivity of the final materials. Cross-linking with styrene does not \nappear to cause microphase separation into pure UP and polystyrene \nphases, since the resulting resistivities are significantly lower than \npredicted by the rule of mixtures. For all temperatures under \ninvestigation (0 \u00b0C to 60 \u00b0C), the lowest resistivities were found for a\n EO:Li+ ratio of 50 (400 \u03a9\u00b7m at 22 \u00b0C), which is in accordance with \nprevious findings. The electrical properties of the present materials \nare determined by diffusion controlled process in such a way \npolarisation prevails at high temperatures. In a proof of principle \nexperiment, one selected UP formulation was injected into drill holes in\n concrete and cured at different temperatures and moisture conditions. \nThis system reliably monitors the resistivity against an embedded \nreference electrode.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>P.
